The world will know and understand me someday. But if that day does not arrive, it does not greatly matter. I shall have opened the way for other women – George Sand
On ne naît pas femme, on le devient – Simone de Beauvoir
Today is an International Women Day, which, no matter national contextes and cultural specificities, still remains an important date to be celebrated and remembered of. Because women still remain “the hugest minority of the world”, because progress still have to be made to obtain higher consideration in the society. Because “this is a man’s world, this is a man’s world. But it wouldn’t be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl”. And because it’s up to us to be bold, and confident, and unique and strong – in our own feminine way. Lot of remarkable women have shown the way, should it be George Sand, Coco Chanel, Oprah Winfrey, Mother Teresa, Catherine the Great, Simone de Beauvoir, Marie Curie, Rosa Parks, Agatha Christie…but I would like to talk about other examples. My favourite women characters from leading TV series, because they definitely are modern role models and thus contribute – humbly but continuously- to change the image and the place women have in the society.
They are bold, have strong personality and stand for their ideal: those characters were an important factor in my liking of series they took part of.
Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), Scandal, 2012 – …
Well, Olivia is an absolute star on screens and on the Internet. Brilliant, determined, and mysterious, she’s the head of crisis management firm working namely for White House. She has a burning desire to help people, and she perfectly assumes what she wants. I like her boldness and her profound humanity.
Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres), Suits, 2011-…
Self-made woman, bacame co-founding and managing partner of Pearson Hardman. Fiercely dedicated to her firm, she’s an excellent observer and a brilliant strategist. Very straight and pragmatic with people, she appears calculating and merciless but is selective and meritocratic, devoted for rare people she lets being close, and sponsors the rise of her subordinates.
Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen), Boston Legal, 2004-2008
Shirley is a name partner in the legal firm of Crane, Poole & Schmidt. As smart as desirable, as tough as sexy, she is a brilliant layer who fights for her ideals.
Margarita Rebrova (Maria Berseneva), Margosha, 2009-…
Margo is in fact a man transformed into woman by one of former conquest’ vengeance. The beginning is not very winsome, but the serie depicts lot of funny quiproquo, illustrates behaviorial differencies between men and women, shows sex-driven limits imposed by the society, and allows to imagine how a man would act in a woman’ skin. Margo is as subtle as a war tank, but deliciously direct, limitless, and creative.
Donna Paulsen (Sarah Rafferty), Suits, 2011-…
Donna is an executive executant in Pearson Hardman. Red-heared guardian angel, she is frightfully efficient, subtly irremplaceable, and incredibly human. She knows everything about everyone in the firm and uses it to do the good.
Jamie Sawyer (Anna Wood), Reckless, 2014
Jamie is a new defense attorney in town. She is cool, confident and fearless and will shake the whole city upside down to punish the bad guys and protect the innocent.
Hope those characters would inspire you as well… Have a nice Woman’s Day,
